Announcing Home & Away
Welcome to my new newsletter.
Every Friday morning, I will use this space to share my views on citizenship and democracy and analyze U.S. foreign policy and international affairs. You can also expect occasional musings on my golf game and New York teams including the Giants, Yankees, and Knicks.
I realize that I am known mostly for foreign policy and it continues to be a core part of my DNA, but at the same time, I am increasingly concerned with what is happening here at home.
Indeed, this concern motivated my most recent book, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizenship. I argue that in order for American democracy to survive, or better yet thrive, the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded. Obligations need to be placed on the same footing as rights, and in the book I propose ten specific obligations that, if embraced, will help heal our divisions and safeguard the country’s future. I plan to use this space to continue to share my thinking on the state of U.S. democracy and citizenship.
This newsletter will also focus on how international and domestic developments and how they often affect each other. Globalization has ensured that what happens across the world will shape life here the United States. By the same token, and owing to the outsized role that the United States has played over the last century, the world will continue to be significantly affected by U.S. domestic developments.
I encourage you to subscribe to keep updated on my latest commentary. Watch your inbox next Friday morning for the first edition of my newsletter.
