How about some nuance when characterizing Democratic Socialists. Bernie and AOC are hardly “anti-police,” etc. Scare language against everything left of center has distorted political discourse in the US, foreclosing a whole range of thought and policymaking without fair consideration.
It did seem like a long list of unexplained descriptors applied to Democratic Socialists. In that case I have to plead ignorance, but it would serve the reader better not to explain what is wrong with Democratic Socialists, but rather what is wrong with mainstream Democrats that allows Democratic Socialists to make headway at their expense.
Richard, I think NYC is to Democrat Socialists what Texas is to far right MAGA and neither represent a reasonable path forward. I hope the Democrats will nominate a moderate like Shapiro or BeShear in 28 as they have worked with Republican legislatures successfully and we need an end to continuing chaos. Thanks for reminding us of not only our ‘rights’ but our obligations to live in a functioning democracy!

Taiwan is the most important structural issue of Global Peace, War &/or Leadership. If China gets anywhere near Taiwan it will sooner or later win the AI & Supercomputing Revolution & become a dominant Global Indistrial Power. If it remains independent; then, it can benefit from regional support and unhampered Socio-economic growth. Meaning more trade opportunities & open markets for Taiwanese industries. U.S. must step away from its commitment to One China Policy & provide all support necessary for Taiwan to successfully defend itself; thus, securing U.S. Global leadership, Regional Security & Strategic influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Here in Japan I am surprised to see how many preparations for an invasion of Taiwan are underway, quietly. There is real concern that this may happen before the US elections in November.

I find your comments about France — “French Toast” and “ Is Paris Burning?” particularly concerning. Human lives are at stake and hospitals are overwhelmed. The number of deaths in France is increasing and includes four toddlers and over 55 drownings, as the brutally hot conditions sweeping Europe were forecast to shift east, choking 150 million people under 35C (95F) temperatures. That is no joking matter. Stick to your facts and what is happening in your own country which really is nothing to laugh about either.

I suspect Trump's current plan is bribe Iran into effectively joining the Abraham group, abandon any nuclear weapons ambitions, give up on proxies like the hopelessly incompetent Hamas, and open up its economy to join the world and become rich--all goals of the protesters. I also suspect that the number of Americans willing to die for Taiwan's independence is in negative territory--just like Ukraine.
I was disturbed to see Dan Goldman swamped by the likes of Lander, to me just another pol, and nowhere near Goldman intellectually. Unfortunately, Goldman was too close to AIPAC and Lander was able to make it a one issue campaign when there are more important issues that affect us. The other two winners, Valdez and Chevalier, seem like lightweights. Interestingly, Chevalier walked out of an interview when the questioning got too intense.
