Welcome to this special edition of Home & Away. I am writing it to provide my answer to a question that I am hearing with increasing frequency: What can those who disagree with Donald Trump and his administration’s actions do about it? There has to be a better response than emulating the ostrich and burying your head in the sand in the hope it will blow over. Nor is indiscriminate opposition the answer, as certain Trump initiatives arguably deserve support and, in any event, should be judged on their merits.
Richard, lots of great ideas. But ideas are not action. What will you DO, as I ask my Congressional Representatives. How much I would love to see all the stove-piped organizations and Substack writers that I admire join forces as a coalition of highly qualified civic leaders. A shadow “We the People” cabinet. Hold mock hearings as you say. Educate people. Bring in young people to help staff it. Bring in free retired experts to staff and mentor the younger ones. Do it on TV. Invite Project 2025 authors. Did you know Project 2025 actually makes a strong case for USAID? Why? To counteract “communist” China. This can change people’s minds. When I worked for Republicans in Congress, it was fascinating to learn deeper details on programs under investigation or in proposed in legislation. I changed my mind. Given facts, others will change their minds too. There is no US law against people power. Let’s use it with competence and courage.
Right on the money! We are all in this echo chamber where we can vent all we want with much agreement from others but with few if any action plans. Yes, we can harangue our congressman at a few townhall meetings. But in order to energize more voters it is important for our voices to be heard by many more voters. So your proposal is worthy of consideration. Those who can better articulate our perspective on the potential downfall of US democracy must get would serve the cause well if they got themselves invited to news and political commentary programs on the right to spread the word about the grave times we are living in. If there ever was a time for truth to be delivered to the voters, this is it. A time that we might ever again we’ll have again.
How about encouraging Ukraine to offer the EU a portion of its mineral rights to help pay back the future aid for defense instead of paying the blackmail that the Current admin wants!
I usually agree with you Richard but ignoring some of the Trump stuff like making women’s sports safe - come on. Meanwhile Trump has let out dig lords and soon a sex trafficker. You can’t look the other way on anything. And the Dems are not a party of ideology - they look to do what’s right for the citizens. Look at any GOP legislators, from county to state to federal and it’s all about controlling the people and adding more costs or pain. The blue states pay for the red states. I like some of your ideas but as the GOP is too far gone to negotiate with, then what. And you also left off the disasters in removing all the CISA dept and negotiations with Russia or rather selling our soul.
Thanks for sticking up for Canada.
The democrats are weak. All they have done is ask me for money. No action. No clear leader.

Very thoughtful…thank you
So a Trumpski fellow traveler wants to “help” the Opposition…why trust a fascist?
