I am just back from Germany, where the mood is unsurprisingly downbeat given that the economy is shrinking, the political leadership is uninspiring, and the society is experiencing difficulty assimilating several million immigrants who have settled in Germany over the past decade. For these reasons and more, the far right has been gaining ground.
